Deze thrillerachtige roman gaat over de schatrijke 41-jarige Russische zakenman Igor Malev. Hij heeft alles in het leven, maar door zijn obsessie met roem en succes en de liefde voor zijn telefoonbedrijf is hij zijn vrouw Ewa kwijtgeraakt. Hij gaat een wereld verwoesten om haar terug te krijgen en doet dat door onschuldige mensen te vermoorden tijdens het filmfestival van Cannes. Daar is niet alleen de jetset van de film- en mode-industrie aanwezig, maar ook Ewa met haar nieuwe man. Op ingenieuze en telkens wisselende wijze doodt Igor in een etmaal vier mensen. Na elke moord stuurt hij Ewa een sms'je met als doel haar terug te krijgen. Dit lukt niet en Igor draait door. De oorzaak van het gewetenloze geweld ligt bij zijn Afghanistan-trauma.
