Hoofdpersoon is de weduwe en literatuur deskundige Sheila Malory die in een klein kustplaatsje woont waar heel wat afgemoord wordt.
De locale huisarts Dr. Cowley wil om zijn fortuin te vergaren een mooi pand met uitzicht op zee in een duur verzorgingshuis veranderen. Tot zijn grote spijt woont de oude Miss Graham daar nog in en is niet van plan haar woning te verlaten. Dan sterft de oude dame plotseling en blijkt na onderzoek dat ze met gif om het leven is gebracht. Mrs Malory laat het er niet bij zitten en is van plan om de moordenaar van haar oude vriendin naar het schavot te slepen. Natuurlijk verdenkt ze onaangename dr. Crowly van de moord. Maar al gauw blijkt dat nog meer duistere figuren op een grote som geld azen.

As Mrs. Malory fears, the answer is most distressing: poor Miss Graham is cruelly, unkindly, and most diabolically killed with her favorite dessert. Of course, it appears that Dr. Cowley must have done it—except that he has an ironclad alibi. Now Mrs. Malory is snooping in earnest, hoping her search will lead her to intriguing revelations: about the physician with ambition, about a weak-willed nephew and his pushy wife, about a pretty neighbor of questionable virtue, and about a very large sum of money. Of course, Mrs. Malory’s persistent inquiries may also get her killed.
