Hoofdpersoon is de weduwe en literatuur deskundige Sheila Malory die in een klein kustplaatsje woont waar heel wat afgemoord wordt.
Als Sheila Malory bij haar goede vriend en TV avtuer David Beaumont op bezoek gaat, hoort ze hem dat hij vreselijk in de put zit. Niet alleen heeft hij torenhoge schulden en staat op het punt zijn mooie te huis te moeten verkopen ook lijkt hij door alle problemen de kans op de perfecte rol te verspelen. Zij enige hoop is dat zijn nare broer Francis, de Dean van Culminster Cathedral, hem te hulp schiet. Maar de kille, egoïstische Francis weigert dat. Als enkele uren later Francis Beaumont vermoord gevonden wordt, gaat de verdenking uit naar Davis Beaumont. Mrs Malory kan niet geloven dat haar oude vriend in koele bloede zijn eigen broer om het leven gebracht zou hebben en stapt weer in haar detective-schoenen op onderzoek uit.
