Saab 900 - 2.0 Turbo Red Arrow

De Saab 900 Turbo behoeft eigenlijk geen introductie. Met zijn 175 pk sterke tweeliter motor, goed voor een top van 200, was het in 1987 zondermeer een van de snelste familie-auto’s op de markt. Maar het kon nog beter, meende de Nederlandse importeur. In een oplage van 150 stuks was daar opeens de 900 Red Arrow. Dit was een 900 Turbo waarvan al helemaal geen enkele twijfel meer kon bestaan als het op z’n sportieve uiterlijk aankwam. Los van vuurrode lak en een interieur dat was afgeladen met opties, was deze Turbo-variant uitgerust met een complete Airflow skirtset rondom, alsmede wielkastverbreders en gestroomlijnde air vents. Onder de achterruit een deels in rood meegespoten whaletail-spoiler plus natuurlijk velgen in Aero-design.
De auto werd geadverteerd met ‘Als u van opschieten houdt, moet u wel snel zijn’ - de importeur verwachtte dat de 150 gemaakte exemplaren rap aan de man zouden worden gebracht. En dat gebeurde ook. Ruim 30 jaar later is het merendeel van de 150 oorspronkelijk in Nederland geleverde Red Arrows verdwenen, gesloopt of niet meer als zodanig herkenbaar.
Dit exemplaar, nummer 033 van de 150 gebouwde exemplaren, echter heeft de tand des tijds wonderwel doorstaan. De auto heeft inmiddels 214.000 kilometer op de teller staan en is nog zeer strak. De bodem is hard, de onderkant van de motor zeker voor Saab-begrippen nog droog en het beige interieur is erg mooi, met een strak hemeltje. Het originele lakwerk is niet meer zo helder als toen de auto de fabriek verliet, met name op de achterspoiler, maar toch zijn er nauwelijks gebruikssporen op de carrosserie te vinden. Bovendien zijn alle typerende Red Arrow-kenmerken nog altijd aanwezig. De auto is voorzien van diverse nieuwe onderdelen waaronder alle remklauwen en diverse remslangen, de uitlaat (vanaf de katalysator), twee stuurkogels en twee fuseekogels, de benzine-accumulator en de hoofdremcilinder. Een leuke kans om in het bezit te komen van een bijzondere Saab.
Saab’s 900 Turbo needs no introduction. With its 175hp two-liter engine, good for a top of 200 it was without a doubt one of the fastest family saloons on the market in 1987. Could it be bettered? Yes, said the Dutch Saab concessionaire AIM. All of a sudden they introduced the 900 Red Arrow in a limited run of 150 cars. This was a 900 Turbo of which there could be no doubt whatsoever when it came to its sporting appearances. Apart from flame red paint and an interior packed with options, this Turbo variant was equipped with a complete Airflow skirt set and arch extensions all round plus streamlined air vents. Under the rear window Saab a whaletail spoiler, partly painted in red, and finished it off with rims in Aero design.
The car was advertised with "If you like to hurry up, you’ll need to be quick" - the importer expected the 150 cars to sell swiftly. And that happened, too. More than 30 years later, the majority of the Red Arrows originally supplied in the Netherlands have disappeared, have been scrapped or are no longer recognizable as such.
This particular car, number 033 of the 150 Red Arrows built, however, has stood the test of time wonderfully well. The car now has 214,000 kilometers on its clock and is a very nice example. The body is in an excellent condition, the bottom of the engine is dry, not all too common for Saab standards, and the beige interior is very nice, with the roof lining still firm in place. The original paint may not be as shiny as it was when the car left the factory, especially on the rear spoiler, but overall there are hardly any scratches or dents. Moreover, all the typical Red Arrow features are still present. Furthermore we have just supplied the car with a number of new parts: all four brake calipers, the brake master cilinder and some brake hoses, the exhaust (from the catalyc converter), two steering joints and two ball joints. A great opportunity to possess a rather special Saab.
