Thermal modification of wood is a process where without any other chemicals but only by the influence of temperature, pressure and moisture, the chemical structure of cell wall is changed. With the combination of the type of heating medium, processing time, final processing temperature and wood species (the main factors of thermal modification process), wood obtains new desired properties. Through thermal modification, the chemical structure of the wood cell wall is changed, hygroscopic properties and dimensional stability are improved. Better dimensional stability improves the durability of wood-coating system. Thermal modification also improves durability against brown and white rot fungi but not enough against moulds and staining fungi. Because of that, modified wood cannot be used in outdoor services without chemical or coating protection. Some of the mechanical properties are decreased (hardness in all directions), some are unchanged (modulus of elasticity) and some (e.g. brittleness) are increased. Flammability is also increased. The colour of the modified wood is changed (especially intensity of lightness and hue). The durability against weathering is increased also.
