Here is a timely book dealing whith the unadjusted adolescent struggling in the hiatus between childhood and adulthood. Presented with a fresh approach, the book includes case studies which demonstrate accepted psychiatric theories, explore new tenets, and advance new clinical technics that are functionally sound.
The first section of this book focuses on the adolescent's own strengths, weaknesses and aims in psychotherapy, and moves on to his interrelationships with adults and the psychotherapist.
Part II delves more deeply into individual psychotherapy. Some of the topics discussed include the heretical adolescent, the oracle effect, the adolescent's not-so-free association, palliative replacement therapy for chronic deficiencies, and preferred sex of the therapist.
In Part III, the emphasis in on residential treatment for disturbed adolescents. A philosophy of inpatient treatment, psychotic negativism, and detailed attention to choosing and training a qualified staff are but a few of the subjects presented and substantiated with clinical data.
