This book re-examines Italian Renaissance domestic architecture from the viewpoint of Pythagorean geometry, which was the principal mathematical philosophy inculcated in Renaissance architectural education. It governed the whole approach of the Renaissance architect at least from the period of Alberti, in the early and middle fifteenth century, through Vincenzo Scamozzi at the beginning of the seventeenth.
“To the Pythagoreans, who were essentially number magicians” Professor Hersey writes, “numbers were not only quantities, but qualities as well. They had fixed or predictable geometric, psychological, moral, and even personal natures.”. Thus, he maintains, the distribution of elements in a building, such as columns, doors and windows, and their proportional relationships were infused with meanings that we cannot recapture until we examine the mathematical context within which the buildings were designed. Through a study of many Renaissance architectural treatises, he traces the emergence of cubic principles in Renaissance architectural theory and examines these principles as they were applied to several actual buildings. Discussing architects and writers such as Alberti, Filarete, Ficino, Leonardo, Serlio, Palladio, and Cesariano, he gives a convincing picture of the Renaissance architectural thinker at work.
