Eugène Scribe overhandigde de componist al in 1838 het libretto voor L'Africaine (samen met dat voor La Prophète). Het zou tot 28 april 1865 duren voordat de opera in première ging in Parijs.
L'Africaine werd op 3 november 1972 voor het eerst door de San Francisco Opera opgevoerd. De opname op deze DVD is de originele Franse versie in een grootse nieuwe productie die het Opera House in september 1988 aan haar programma toevoegde. De regie van Lotfi Mansouri, het decor van Wolfram Skalicki en de kostuums van Amrei Skalicki vormen de achtergrond voor een eerste-klas bezetting, waaronder Shirley Verrett, Plácido Domingo en Justino Diaz.
