Omschrijving
Opera Bucolica, Georgica et Aeneis by Publius Vergilius Maro. Conradus Sweynheym & Arnoldus Pannartz, Rome, 1469. First edition, folio, pp. 422. Sheep leather binding, spine divided in compartments, titles and elaborate ornaments in gilt to spine and boards, vellum flyleaves. Text edited by Johannes Andreas. Initials in color opening each work and book, two-line initials in red, red capital strokes, contemporary guide-letters. Virgil's work has had wide and deep influence on Western literature, most notably Dante's Divine Comedy, in which Virgil appears as the author's guide through Hell and Purgatory. Virgil has been traditionally ranked as one of Rome's greatest poets. His Aeneid is also considered a national epic of ancient Rome, a title held since composition.
