Broadcast on TV and radio to over 40 countries around the world, the annual New Year's Day Concert in Vienna has been an exalted tradition for more than six decades. For the fourth year in a row, Deutsche Grammophon is releasing this concert of all concerts, again on CD and DVD
As their conductor this year, the Wiener Philharmoniker have invited a NYDC first-timer, Mariss Jansons
Currently the conductor of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra Amsterdam, Jansons’s appearances with the Wiener Philharmoniker date back to 1992 and include more than 65 successful concert performances
Though a newcomer to the New Year’s Day Concert podium, Jansons has always had a passion for the music of Johann Strauss family as well as for the event itself: “It is something quite special: a wonderful opportunity to listen to this music and get to know it. This atmosphere, the Wiener Philharmoniker, the Musikverein – all that adds up to a long and wonderful tradition resulting in fantastic, very specific music.”
Once again, the program is a tasteful mixture of well-known classics and NYDC premieres, which include Johann Strauss II’s Bundesschützenmarsch “Auf’s Korn!” and Liebesbotschaft-Galopp as well as Eduard Strauss’s Telephon Polka française
Two other NYDC premieres give a nod to Mozart Year 2006: the overture from Figaro and Lanner’s waltz Die Mozartisten
The DVD release will include performances by the Wiener Staatsopern Ballet, joined this year by one of the world’s most revered choreographers, John Neumeier. Neumeier has been director and chief choreographer of The Hamburg Ballet for more than 20 years and is a towering presence in the world of dance

De DVD heeft statische menuschermen zonder achtergrondmuziek. De extra’s op deze DVD zijn beelden die tijdens de televisieregistratie zijn gebruikt, als afwisseling op de beelden van het orkest. Alle extra’s zijn in 1.78:1 anamorf NTSC breedbeeld formaat. De twee filmpjes hebben net als het concert PCM stereo, DD5.1 en DTS5.1 geluid. De toespraak en het pauzeprogramma hebben beide alleen DD2.0 stereo geluid.
’Multi Angle’
Bij de start van het concert heb je keuze uit Musikverein concert only en Concert with inserted film sequences. Oftewel, er wordt gebruikt gemaakt van de multi angle optie. Bij twee muziekstukken zijn anderen beelden (natuur en kristalkunst) als tweede beeldhoek toegevoegd. Je kunt de beeldhoek ook wisselen met de afstandsbediening of kiezen bij de tracklisting.
