Als tiener werkte Mason vooreerst als songwriter. Haar compositie Yes, I'm Ready gaf haar ook als vertolkster bekendheid. Verdere tophits tijdens de jaren 60 had ze met Sad Sad Girl en Oh How It Hurts.
Tijdens de jaren 70 werden haar teksten meer direct, de muziek meer funk-georiënteerd, tot aan de rap. Met nummers als Give Me Your Love en From His Woman to You plaatste ze zich weer in de bovenste regionen van de charts. In 1975 zong ze meerdere songs op de door Monk Higgins en Alex Brown verantwoorde soundtrack voor de blaxploitation-misdaadfilm Sheba, Baby.
Nadat Mason in 1975 het label Buddha Records had verlaten, verscheen ze nog sporadisch in de charts. Desondanks stond het door Mason geschreven nummer Yes, Im Ready in 1980 weer helemaal bovenin de charts. Een cover-versie van Teri DeSario en KC and The Sunshine Band bereikte de tweede plaats. Verdere kleinere hits met dit lied lukten Tom Sullivan in 1976 en Jeffrey Osborne in 2004.
Onderscheidingen[bewerken | brontekst bewerken]In 2006 kreeg Mason de Pioneer Award van de Rhythm and Blues Foundation.
