De Amerikaanse singer-songwriter John J. Mellencamp begon zijn carrière als John Cougar. In 1982 bracht hij zijn doorbraakalbum "American Fool" uit, met de nummer 1-hit "Jack & Diane". Het vijftiende album van de zanger, het titelloze "John Mellencamp", werd in 1998 uitgebracht op Columbia Records. Opgenomen met zijn zeskoppige band, bevatte het album gastoptredens van onder anderen Izzy Stradlin en Lisa Germano. Dit album bevat twee live bonustracks.
