This book originated from what we felt was a need for a creative approach to symmography, or thread design, to be used in the teaching of our art classes. For several years, we have included a symmography unit as part of the study on the art element of line. We were dissatisfied with the available resource material, most of which dealt with printed patterns in the "how-to-do-it" style. Our purpose in this book is to offer a creative approachvto symmography design applicable to all ages and levels of ability, whether young students or professional artists.
We wish to emphasize that the line drawings and illustrations are not patterns for finished desins, but are simply examples of basic configurations which can be varied and combined in new, creative ways by each individual.
