Incipit in red, woodcut three-quarter border, woodcut initials, 500 woodcut and type-rule geometric diagrams. Euclid of Alexandria, the world's most famous mathematician and founder of geometry lived and worked in Alexandria. His Elements is one of the most influential works in the history of mathematics, serving as the main textbook of mathematics from the time of its publication until the early 20th century. In the Elements Euclid deduced the theorems of what is now called Euclidean geometry from a set of axioms.
