he lyrics to the Scottish song, Scotland The Brave, was written by Cliff Hanley in 1951. He was a Scottish journalist, writer, author, songwriter, raconteur, after dinner speaker, historian and broadcaster. His books include Dancing in the Streets, The History of Scotland, Rab Ha' - the Glasgow Glutton (co written with Dorothy Whitaker) and Gall in a Day's Work (co written with Willie Gall).
Cliff Hanley was born in Glasgow in 1923.
The song was written by Cliff Hanley for performer, producer and music shop owner (Sauchiehall Street and Renfield Street) Robert Wilson who needed a song to close the act of his performance at a Christmas Scottish review musical show at the Glasgow Empire Theatre. The song soon became popular with Scots people and was quickly adopted as an unofficial national anthem.
Cliff Hanley died in 1999 but his song lives on in the hearts of all Scottish folk.
