"Written in 1794, 'The Old Manor House' is at once a romantic fable and a sharp attack on the way people are persecuted because of poverty or low birth (and are exploited by the greedy and powerful rich).
Charlotte Smith was influenced by some of the egalitarian principles of the French Revolution and conveyed many radical ideas in her writing: that rich and poor could marry in 'The Old Manor House' - with the author's approval - led to accusations that she was destroying the fabric of society. Criticised for concentrating on some of the more onfortunate experiences of marriage (and for drawing too extensively on her own), Charlotte Smith introduced mature women characters into English ficiton and allowed her readers to appreciate that not all endings are happy ones."
