The book starts with a lady called Catherine living in a convent off the coast of Greece having been washed up on the shores to be rescued by the nuns living there.
She's lost her memory and is gradually trying to put together all the pieces of what happened. A man called Constantin Demitris finds out that the woman he tried to get rid of still alive, Catherine and tracks her down to this convent.
Having "saved" her he brings her back to the island to his mansion, lavishes her with clothes, etc. and eventually sends her off to England to help run his offices in London.
She's gradually gaining her memory back and soon realises that the kind gentle man, Constantin is really the man who had her husband and his lover killed.
Constantin is a man determined from having it all to having nothing and a climatic ending is all in this book.
